Jazz and the Art
of Creative Listening is a comprehesive guide to jazz listening, featuring Laura Pierce and Michael Kolodny with world-renowned jazz artists Jimmy Cobb, James Williams and Harvie S.
This double CD comes with a full color 32 page guidebook. A listener can
spend an hour, or many hours, learning in an atmosphere of relaxed, enjoyable
discovery. The first CD in the set, also available separately under the
title Inner Light, is a regular listening CD of 12 jazz tunes.
The companion disc is a workshop on listening which transforms several tunes
from Inner Light into entertaining, interactive adventures.
Through the workshop and the guidebook, Jazz and the Art of Creative Listening
provides all of the essential elements of jazz. Beyond these elements, the
guide offers helpful approaches to the art of creative listening. In this
way, every aspect of the listener's art is fully explored.

| Jazz and the
Art of Creative Listening is the culmination of fifteen years of
practical experience in the field of jazz appreciation, including thousands
of hours creating, experimenting, rehearsing and refining the approach taken
by Jazz Insight. As with Jazz Insight's educational programs,
Jazz and the Art of Creative Listening is designed to inspire a deeper
interest in jazz, and to provide skills for more satisfying listening. The
guide covers the process of improvisation, the feeling of swing, each instrument's
character and role, interactions among the members of the band, the nature
of listening, the spirit and feeling in the art of jazz, and ways jazz and
listening skills can enrich one's life. The guide isn't another jazz history.
It is a pioneering project at the root of jazz appreciation - listening
- created to involve people with the music itself. |
