The Jazz Insight Approach

Concertp Piano Jazz Insight, established in 1999 by saxophonist Michael Kolodny and his wife, vocalist Laura Pierce, is the first company dedicated to building and supporting the jazz audience through jazz listener education. Jazz Insight helps people enjoy jazz by providing the elements in jazz, a variety of listening skills to enjoy those elements, and insight into the jazz approach to music.

The idea is simple: greater listening awareness means greater listening enjoyment. For example, how much fun would it be to watch a ballgame without knowing the rules? The same is true for listening to jazz.
Jazz insight provides the “rules” (conventions and approach) of the jazz game, and helps people play it themselves through interactive, multidimensional home- courses and live workshops. These groundbreaking tools help anyone discover the magic of jazz firsthand: to experience America’s original fine art from the inside.

Jazz Insight Directors
Mike and Laura Laura Pierce holds a BA in Music Education from SUNY Potsdam. She studied voice with Maggi Scott and jazz improvisation with pianist Harvey Diamond. Laura has been singing jazz professionally since 1978, appearing at Boston’s Copley Plaza and Meridian hotels and the Ryles and Regattabar jazz clubs. She has performed with the Dave McKenna All-Stars and the Winiker Swing Orchestra. Laura has taught music since 1978, including jazz workshops, piano and voice lessons, and Kindermusik, the internationally acclaimed music and movement program for young children.

Michael Kolodny studied at the Aaron Copland School of Music and with tenor saxophonist Warne Marsh. He has performed at The Blue Note and Carnegie Hall in his native New York City, and has appeared with Joe Hunt, Jorge Rossy, and other jazz masters. Michael has been teaching jazz since 1978, including private lessons, workshops, master classes, and middle and high school jazz band.

Laura and Michael have performed together since 1988 and were married in 1990. Their guiding principles are those of the jazz tradition: exploring new paths, being spontaneous, expressing a vision, taking chances, and having fun along the way.
